It's the leaning tower of freezer. But at 16ft, is this the country's tallest snowman?

Giant: Ella Broadbent is dwarfed by the 16ft snowman built by her dad, Karl

When Karl Broadbent’s daughters asked him to build a snowman as big as the house, it was always going to be a tall order.

But instead of laughing it off he grabbed a set of ladders, a large bucket and rose to the challenge.

After all, he could hardly tell them there was too little snow. The heaviest snowfall for 30 years had left his garden under an incredible 24 inches.

Six hours later his 16ft creation was finally complete – and yes, it really was as tall as the house.

‘I thought we’d stop at 8ft and I asked if we should put the head on it, but it still wasn’t as big as the house,’ he said yesterday.

‘After trying to fob the girls off at 10ft we realised they were not going to let us off. In the end me and a friend got a bit stupid, as dads do, and we ended up with a 16ft snowman.’

There is, however, one little – well, giant – problem.

As the thaw sets in this weekend Mr Snowman – as the girls have christened him – is beginning to melt and is in danger of toppling on to the house.

Mr Broadbent, a 38-year-old businessman who runs a paintball company, said he was inspired after his daughters had a snowman-making competition at their school. When Ella, 10, and Mollie, seven, then asked him if he could build one as big as the house he could not refuse.
