Next month, video game designer and fanatic "Colbert Report" fan Richard Garriott will travel to the space station as a private citizen, and deposit Colbert's genes into an "Immortality Drive" time capsule. You never know, it could be the saving grace the world needs someday.
"I am thrilled to have my DNA shot into space, as this brings me one step closer to my lifelong dream of being the baby at the end of the movie '2001: A Space Odyssey,'" Colbert said in a statement.
Garriott, one of the first private citizens to be launched into space, is collecting objects for a time capsule of human DNA as a record of humanity's most incredible achievements and personal messages.
"In the unlikely event that Earth and humanity are destroyed, mankind can be resurrected with Stephen Colbert's DNA," Garriott said in a statement. "Is there a better person for us to turn to for this high-level responsibility?
Before heading up his own Comedy Central parody show, Colbert was a fake news correspondent on Jon Stewart's "The Dailey Show."
Colbert also appeared on the short-lived "The Dana Carvey Show", and the cult favorite "Strangers With Candy" as Chuck Noblet. He has made guest appearances on The Simpsons, American Dad, Spin City, Crank Yankers, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, and fourteen episodes of Saturday Night Live.
Colbert also played Jay Kell in the Mike Myers summer movie flop "The Love Guru", and is lending his distinctive voice to the President of the United States in the animated family adventure "Monsters vs. Aliens", with Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Rainn Wilson and Kiefer Sutherland.
"Monsters vs. Aliens" tells the story of what happens when a meteorite from outer space hits a young girl and turns her into a giant monster, and she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years.
Not everyone is a Stephen Colbert fan, but look on the bright side - it could have been DNA from Amy Winehouse or Britney Spears.
